On Sunday night, Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, joined the hall of fame of Super Bowl halftime performers comprising music behemoths such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Madonna, The Rolling Stones and more. The three-time Grammy winner took to the stage during halftime for Sunday’s game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs. (Tom Brady, football GOAT (Greatest of All Time) led the Buccaneers to victory.)
The Weeknd had tough shoes to fill – not just because he had to follow last year’s dazzling act by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, which drew over 104 million viewers, but also because of limitations due to COVID-19. But deliver he did! From his trademark spangled suit jacket to medical bandages, background dancers wearing face masks to golden mirrored hallways – there was a lot to take in. The most overwhelming bit was probably the dizzying turn his rendition of ‘Can’t Feel My Face’ took, giving most viewers second-hand vertigo.
