Celebrating Women’s Day With 8 Bollywood Songs for Women

Bollywood has often been criticized for being lewd and sexist towards women. Movies are known to propagate item numbers, crude jokes on body parts of women, unhealthy body image, objectification of women, and much more. Cinema hasn’t helped much to uplift the status of women in Indian society, where they are always placed beneath the male majority. However, some filmmakers have realized the impact cinema has on the audience and tried to create movies that inspire the female youth of the country to be strong, bold and fearless.

So on the special occasion of Women’s Day, we bring you eight songs from Bollywood dedicated to all women. This list goes to every woman out there who has been told that she is less than a man, who has been denied opportunities for being a woman, who has been told she is meant to be weak and emotional, and who has been discriminated against endlessly “for her own good” (or so they say). Here’s to Women Power!

“Badal Pe Paon Hain” – Chak De! India

Sound of Music has taught us that “When the Lord closes a door, somewhere he opens a window.” This song shows us the struggles of a female hockey team that was denied opportunities in their own country but did not give up on their dream to be the best.

“Hum To Aise Hain Bhaiya” – Laaga Chunari Mein Daag

This is a song about acceptance – accepting ourselves as we are, good and bad, no matter what societal rules dictate. Just be yourself and be proud of who you are.

“Masakali” – Delhi 6

You can be a woman and be as carefree as you’d like to be. Be happy. Enjoy life. Live it your way. Do not care about what other people say. As Taylor Swift said – “Haters gonna hate, hate, hate.

“O Womaniya” – Gangs of Wasseypur

Yes, it is okay for a woman to have desires. No, it is not a man’s thing. We need to stop categorizing emotions as male or female. Emotions have no gender. Desire is the most primal feeling and does not need to be suppressed.

“Aye Bachchu” – Ghajini

As the protagonist of this film, Asin was carefree, fearless and did not hesitate to speak her mind. The song inspires its listeners to be more like her!

“Jugni” – Queen

Say NO to oppression. Stand up for yourself and be what you want to be. There’s nothing that can hold you back, but yourself. You do not need a runaway groom to make you realize that!

“Love You Zindagi”Dear Zindagi

Over centuries, women have been put down by patriarchy. But we always find a way to rise up above the pettiness of human beings and enjoy our lives our way, and this song reminds us to do just that.

“Main Kaun Hoon”Secret Superstar

We conclude with this song that reminds women that we cannot let fear rule our lives. Women are made of pain and we can thrive despite any difficulties. Because we are WOMEN!
