Test Cricket: Dream XI of the Decade

The new decade has started with Australia continuing their home dominance by beating New Zealand in the second Test. And with South Africa struggling against a mediocre England on home soil. Things will pick up steam and build up to the World T20 Championship in Australia later this year. India will meanwhile take on Sri Lanka in yet another (T20) series at home. It feels new and yet old. The era is the same, but the date is different.

Let’s celebrate the evolution of cricket a little more by taking a look at a dream XI of the last decade. These aren’t merely the best eleven cricketers of the decade. These are eleven of the best cricketers between 2010-19, position-wise in a team. So you see some star names missing out only because someone else is just better at the same position in the team.

TEST XI:

ALASTAIR COOK (ENG)

He tapered off towards the end of his career last year, but Cook remains the most prolific and solid opener of the decade. The fact is nobody topped his 8818 runs.

Feels amazing to score my 4th double hundred for England

DAVID WARNER (AUS)

His 7088 runs have come at a quick clip, with an average of almost 50, despite losing a year of cricket in between.

STEVE SMITH (AUS)

Smith edges world-class cricketers like Hashim Amla, Cheteshwar Pujara and Kane Williamson at no. 3, simply because he is the best Test batsman of this generation.

VIRAT KOHLI (IND)

Kohli was a late Test bloomer, but how he has bloomed! Reliable, solid, classy.

ROSS TAYLOR (NZ)

Ross Taylor is the most underrated, and finest, no. 5 of this generation, and currently New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket.

BJ WATLING (NZ)

It hasn’t been a great decade for wicketkeepers, but Watling has been the best of them, both with gloves and as a Test batsman to bet your life on.

BEN STOKES (ENG)

Stokes has been the superstar all-rounder of the decade along with…

SHAKIB AL HASAN (BANG)

Shakib is quite simply the greatest all-round cricketer since Jacques Kallis.

RAVICHANDRAN ASHWIN (IND)

The most effective spinner of this generation edges out Nathan Lyon by an inch.

DALE STEYN (SA)

The greatest fast bowler of our time, by a country mile.

JAMES ANDERSON (ENG)

Still going strong, still picking up those fifers abroad.

Test Bench:

Stuart Broad, Kane Williamson, Joe Root, Hashim Amla, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Cheteshwar Pujara, Michael Clarke, Mitchell Johnson, Kevin Pieterson.

Now that you’ve seen the dream XI team, don’t forget to check out some exciting sports events in your area here.
