UEFA Champions League

The Cardiff Final in the first week of June will be played between two-time winners Juventus and 11-time winners Real Madrid – after both teams came through their semifinals against Monaco and Atletico Madrid respectively.

This will be Juventus’ sixth final and Real Madrid’s 13th final (their third in the last four years alone). Since the turn of the century, Barcelona has won this title four times, and Madrid has won it thrice. No other European football team has won as many as Madrid’s 11 titles.

Juventus is the only unbeaten team (nine wins, three draws) remaining in the tournament this year. Madrid (eight wins, three draws, one loss) lost their second leg semifinal to rivals Atletico, but went through on a 4-2 aggregate. Madrid has scored 11 more goals than Juventus in their 12 games (32), though Juventus – the defensive masters of Europe – have conceded only two goals all competitions.

Indian T20 League

Kings XI Punjab have kept themselves in the tournament by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders in a close game on Tuesday night, and then Mumbai Indians on Thursday night. The fourth spot is still up for grabs, with Sunrisers Hyderabad in pole position to take it with just one game left. Punjab have to hope that Hyderabad lose their last game, coupled with them winning their final game – a long shot, but not impossible. Their strategy of promoting Wriddhiman Saha to the opener’s spot after the departure of Hashim Amla seems to have paid off.

By this weekend, the four teams reaching the playoffs will be confirmed. In all likelihood, they will be: Mumbai Indians, Rising Pune Supergiants, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad/Kings XI. Only the order is left to be decided.

Royal Challengers Bangalore will end the season as the wooden spooners – dead last. They have only two wins with one game to go. This is the first time in T20 history that they will finish last.

Matches to look forward to this weekend:
KKR v/s MI on May 13, Saturday 8 PM
Supergiant v/s Kings XI on May 14, Sunday 4 PM
