The MCU has greatly altered the origin of Falcon/Sam Wilson compared to his comic counterpart. We know Sam in the movies as a military veteran who withdrew from service after a mission gone wrong. Left with post-traumatic stress, Sam started a support group for veterans. He met Steve Rogers while the two were out running. Sam got more annoyed each time the Avenger overtook him. During his time with the Air Force, Sam was testing a high tech experimental set of wings, and when Rogers called for help, Sam donned the wings and Falcon was born.
Sam Wilson’s comic origins are completely different from the one seen in the MCU. Sam’s father was a member of a church in Harlem and killed trying to prevent gang violence. Sam’s mother was murdered by a mugger two years later. Sam’s parents’ deaths affected him deeply. He was forced to turn to crime as a means of survival, becoming the sort of criminal he hated. Red Skull brainwashed Sam Wilson and gave him bird-like superpowers, hoping to create a soldier to take out Cap. The Avenger was able to break Red Skull’s control over Falcon and forge a partnership with him. Comic Sam also had the ability to communicate with birds and it was Black Panther who provided his mechanical wings.
