Best Of 2020: 8 Indian Web Series That Stood Out This Year

No one will disagree that 2020 was one of the worst in recent history. The coronavirus pandemic disrupted regular life, and staying indoors became the new normal. Perhaps the only good thing about the year was the quality of television platforms served up. We looked back at the Indian web series we enjoyed and shortlisted eight that stood out.


Based on the Spanish series Penoza, the series casts a lens on the drug trade in Rajasthan through the lives of a well-to-do family that falls on hard times. Sushmita Sen puts in a terrific performance as a widowed mother who’d go to any length to protect her children. Read our review here.

Helmed by acclaimed director Prakash Jha, Aashram is a crime drama revolving around Baba Nirala, a self-styled godman in the town of Kashipur in Uttarakhand, and the dark secrets that lie buried underneath his empire. Bobby Deol put in a fine performance in his web series debut, and was ably supported by the rest of the case that included Chandan Roy Sanyal and Aaditi Pohankar among others. Read our review here.

One of the most riveting police procedurals in recent times, Voot’s Asur follows a team of forensic experts as they chase a serial killer whose actions appear to be driven by Indian mythology. The show marked Arshad Warsi’s web series debut, who nailed his part as top CBI cop Dhananjay Rajpoot.

‘Paatal Lok’

Amazon Prime’s Paatal Lok is a crime drama that centers around a failed plot to assassinate a prominent journalist in Delhi. Further investigation reveals that the case is far from what it appears to the eye. A slice-of-life comedy from The Viral Fever stable, Panchayat revolves around a young college graduate who leaves his cushy life in the city to take up an unglamorous government job in a small village. The series uses humour to shed light on socially relevant topics like dowry, family planning and sexism prevalent in rural India even today. Read our review here.

‘Scam 1992’

Adapted from Sucheta Dalal and Debashis Basu’s book The Scam, SonyLIV’s Scam 1992 (pictured above) is a biographical drama on infamous stockbroker Harshad Mehta, the man credited with pulling off the largest financial scam in India’s history. The ten-part series takes us through the man’s rapid rise on Dalal Street as he exploits loopholes in the Indian system to build his empire, and the steep fall from grace that followed once his secrets started unraveling. ‘The Gone Game’

The pandemic gave rise to a new trend in the world of web series – lockdown specials that were self-shot by actors in their own homes. The most impressive of these was Voot’s The Gone Game. Set over March and April 2020, the series hinges on the lives of the Gujrals, who are scattered across the country during the lockdown and keep in touch via regular video calls. One of the family members gets tested positive for COVID-19 and is soon declared dead. However there’s more to this than meets the eye. Read our review here.

An intense, gripping thriller based on real-life events, Undekhi revolves around the cold-blooded murder of a young tribal girl at a wedding in front of a thousand eyewitnesses. The perpetrator and his influential family try to cover up the crime with the help of corrupt cops, but a young cameraman who was present at the wedding has recorded the entire incident.
