Binidya Akankshi Bhatnagar aka Beanie (Swara Bhasker) is living a pretty regular life. She has a good job, an ultra-rich and committed, if boring boyfriend (Varun Thakur), and typical middle-class parents (Mona Ambegaonkar and Girish Kulkarni) who just want her to get married and produce grandchildren. So when the boyfriend proposes and things get too real, Beanie decides she’s had it with boring and regular; she’s going to follow her heart which beats for stand-up comedy.
Encouraged by her friend (Dolly Singh) and fellow comedian (Ravi Patel), Beanie takes to the stage and bombs miserably. But hey, when life throws you lemons you use them and down tequila shots, right? And that’s exactly what Beanie does. Armed with an arsenal of abrasive, scatological and sexual jokes, she works the crowd with vengeance. As she tells her parents, she feels fantastic because for once, she’s doing exactly what she’s always wanted to do.
Bhaag Beanie Bhaag gives us mild, exceedingly mild, undertones of the truly brilliant The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. And if this show is even half as good as Rachel Brosnahan starrer, we’re in for a good time.
Season one of Bhaag Beanie Bhaag releases on Netflix on Friday, December 4.
