Bo Burnham has been cast to play basketball icon Larry Bird in HBO’s currently untitled Los Angeles Lakers drama series. The project is based on Jeff Pearlman’s 2014 book Showtime and created by Succession producer Adam McKay. The show will chronicle the success of The Lakers in the 1980s. That decade, the team won five NBA championships. They beat Bird and the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals twice and lost to them once.
Comedian and Eighth Grade writer-director Burnham recently returned to acting in the Oscar-nominated, Promising Young Woman. He joins an ensemble cast in this new Lakers series that includes Michael Chiklis, Sally Field, John C. Reilly, and Adrien Brody. An air date has not been announced, but McKay is set to direct the pilot, written by executive producer, Max Borenstein.
