This Women’s Day, Netflix is bringing to us Bombay Begums, a six-part series that tells us stories of five women across different age groups and social stratas, whose paths cross in the city of Mumbai.
Directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, who has co-written and co-directed Amazon series Made in Heaven, and Bornila Chatterjee the show marks Pooja Bhatt‘s return to acting after a long hiatus. According to the show’s trailer that released earlier today, Bhatt plays Rani, the honcho of a big bank whose career comes under threat. Then there’s Amruta Subhash as the foul-mouthed and straight-talking bar dancer Lily, who yearns for respect from society for herself and her son. Shahana Goswami pairs up with Vivek Gomber once again after A Suitable Boy. She plays Fatima, an ambitious woman looking to climb the corporate ladder, only to be pulled down by an ill-timed pregnancy. Ayesha (Plabita Borthakur) is another bright young girl, who must make compromises if she wants to rise in the ranks. The last of the five women is Shai (Aadhya Anand), Rani’s step-daughter and a troubled teenager. Bombay Begums takes us through the challenges these women face and the societal norms they must stand up against in their quest for happiness. Others in the cast include Rahul Bose, Danish Husain and Manish Chaudhari.
Bombay Begums will stream from Monday, March 8 on Netflix.
