Another spinoff of the Walking Dead universe is on it’s way and this is a weird one. Former showrunner and current producer Scott M. Gimple revealed that a comedic spin on the zombie world is currently being developed.
“We are working on a straight Walking Dead comedy right now. We’re not making fun of our world, but it’s just more of a comedic take on the world.”
The zombie apocalypse of the show doesn’t really seem like a place where you can find a barrel of laughs. While zombie apocalypses have been the setting for comedies, it’s The Walking Dead, not Zombieland. Throughout its long run, the show has largely focused on the human drama that comes from the grim reality of its world. It’s such a drastic departure from the show we’re used to seeing that it’s difficult to imagine what a Walking Dead comedy would be like. In his quote, Gimple makes it clear that the show won’t be a parody of the the existing universe. Perhaps, characters with a more comic outlook on their predicament would be focused on. How a show like this would work the Walking Dead’s world-building having been established over decade is an interesting question.
