Ekta Kapoor launched ALT Balaji in 2017, ushering in a massive paradigm shift from her brand of saas-bahu soaps. The streaming platform was meant for a different generation of audience. Kapoor produced several web series to cater to younger viewers. Among the first of these was Dev DD, a modern-day retelling of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Devdas.
What makes Dev DD different from Devdas? Apart from being set in contemporary India, the series doesn’t have a Devdas but a Devika. Devika Dharam Dwivedi aka Dev DD aka Vicky (Asheema Vardaan) is everything that Indian society frowns upon — a woman who smokes, drinks, is unabashedly promiscuous and a rebel who doesn’t bow down to patriarchy. Her biggest supporter is her father, who loves her the way she is and unlike the rest of the world, doesn’t want her to change her ways. The show touches upon sexism, homophobia, menstruation and many other taboo topics.
In the first season, we saw Devika meet Parth (Akhil Kapur), a progressive guy. The two hit it off and eventually fell in love. It’s only when talks of marriage are brought up that Parth reveals his true colours. He wants Devika to be the demure, stay-at-home wife which of course is unacceptable to her. This results in the two of them parting ways.
The breakup sends Devika into a spiral of alcohol and bad decisions. After having caused a lot of distress to her family, she decides to leave home and move to Mumbai, where she lives with her best friend Chandni (Rashmi Agdekar). Here she meets Anurag Rana (Sanjay Suri), a businessman who offers her a job. Very soon the two become a thing, before the startling revelation that Anurag is Devika’s best friend’s father. The season ends with Anurag leaving Devika.
Four years after the first season, Dev DD is now returning. Season two will start off with Devika dealing with the aftermath of her separation with Anurag. This time around we will see a more mature Devika who is in better control of her anger, but continues to challenge norms and preconceived notions of society. If the trailer is to be believed, the new season promises plenty of drama and fireworks. The trailer also gives glimpses of subplot revolving around LGBTQ+ representation. New faces in the cast include Aman Uppal as Paritosh, who will spark a romance with Devika, and Nauheed Cyrusi as Anurag’s new love interest.
Season two of Dev DD will stream from Saturday, February 20 on ALT Balaji and Zee5.
