As if the horrors of 2020 weren’t enough, this year also gave us some interesting horror movies, centered on its female characters. After Ghost Stories in January, Bulbbul in June, and Kaali Khuhi in October, we finally end the year with Durgamati, directed by G. Ashok. Based on the filmmaker’s 2018 Telugu and Tamil horror thriller Bhaagamathie, Durgamati is a remake starring Bhumi Pednekar in the lead. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Akshay Kumar and Vikram Malhotra under T-Series, Cape of Good Films and Abundantia Entertainment.
What’s Durgamati About:
Besides the lead character, Durgamati’s main players are Ishwar Prasad the rogue politician (played by Arshad Warsi), a police officer who is out for revenge (Jisshu Sengupta), and an investigating officer on the case of 12 missing temple idols (Mahie Gill). The case leads the investigating duo to IAS Chanchal Chauhan (Pednekar), who is imprisoned for the murder of her husband Rohan (Karan Kapadia), who also happens to be Sengupta’s character’s brother. Chanchal was once involved with Ishwar Prasad, who is the target of his political enemies. In order to get revenge for his brother and bring down Ishwar Prasad, the officer brings Chanchal to Durgamati haveli for further investigation that can be conducted in privacy. While Chanchal refuses to give them any dirt on Ishwar Prasad, strange things happen to her in the haveli, which is rumored to be haunted. Later in the trailer, we see her being possessed by the haveli’s spirit, leading to some disastrous consequences for all the characters involved.
Why You Should Watch:
Hindi remakes of South Indian films rarely hit the mark right but still tend to do wonders in the box office. While Durgamati is not releasing theatrically, it will be interesting to see how the South and Bollywood audiences perceive it online. The movie’s plot appears similar to Bhaagamathie, so anyone who enjoyed the bilingual film is likely to see what the Bhumi Pednekar starrer has to offer. From the trailer, the lead actress seems confident getting into the shoes of Anushka Shetty‘s character that was highly applauded in its time. Pednekar, who has a number of good films to her name, is likely to add yet another feather to her cap as the sole lead of this one. Even the supporting actors played by Warsi, Sengupta and Gill seem well cast for this film. Ultimately, horror is a Bollywood fan favorite and will always win hearts if the film is well executed and performed to perfection.
