Better Call Saul is approaching its final season and it’s now clear that the spinoff series has been good enough to rival even its predecessor, Breaking Bad. The end raises the question of whether or not Vince Gilligan will continue to expand on his show’s world with more stories. Actors like Giancarlo Esposito have been sharing their own ideas for spinoffs featuring their characters.
This is what the actor told Esquire about his character Gus Fring and the motivations he would like to see explored in a spinoff he calls “The Rise Of Gus”.
“I have this whole storyline in the back of my head that he came from political royalty. I feel like Gus came from the world of order. He was a military man. Out of the military, he gained the ability to observe. You can’t lead unless you can follow… In my brain, he was high up in a military government. He could have stayed there and ran the country. It was handed to him. But he chose a different path to be his own man and to find his own power, regardless of what he was handed. This is what he chose.”
What Esposito had to say about the character’s past indicate he might know some things from the writer’s rooms and that ideas for a Gus spinoff may have already come up or he could have just been going by information presented on the show. Either way, from the detail with which he discusses his character in the interview, creator Vince Gilligan may well revisit Gus.
