6 Golden Globe Nominated Shows To Watch If You Haven’t Already

Television’s time to shine under the spotlight is almost here! Come February 28 and TV’s finest will rub shoulders, virtually for the first time, with its big-screen counterparts, at the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards. Hosted for the fourth time by our favourite duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the nominations were announced by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson yesterday. Here’s our list of picks of nominated shows you must watch, if you haven’t already, before the awards.

‘The Crown’

Season four of The Crown (pictured above) had a lot of expectations when it was announced. Not only was it going to showcase one of the most documented periods of British royal history, but also introduce two important figures from British culture – Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson) and Princess Diana (Emma Corrin). When it aired, it not only matched but at times surpassed those expectations. Pitch perfect performances, especially that of Corrin’s, coupled with captivating storylines made this season our favourite of the show yet. The Crown leads the television category with six nominations. Read our review here.
Directors: Benjamin Carron, Jessica Hobbs, Julian Jarrold, Paul Whittington
Writers: Peter Morgan, Jonathan Wilson
Cast: Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson, Emma Corrin, Josh O’Connor, Helena Bonham Carter
Streaming on: Netflix

While The Crown exceeded our expectations, Ryan Murphy’s take on one of literature’s greatest villains, Mildred Ratched, did the exact opposite. The show was brimming with potential that never managed to take off. So why is it on our list? Two words – Sarah Paulson. As the titular Nurse Ratched, Paulson hits it out of the ballpark and proves that she deserves the nod for the best actress in the drama category. Also, the show is an absolute feast for the eyes as it sets up a fictional world that looks sumptuous. Read our review here.
Creator: Evan Romansky
Cast: Sarah Paulson, Sharon Stone, Cynthia Nixon, Finn Wittrock, Judy Davis, Jon Jon Briones, Charlie Carver, Alice Englert
Streaming on: Netflix

‘Emily in Paris’

Emily in Paris is a pure, escapist fantasy. It’s what would happen if the Devil Wears Prada had a French fling with Sex and the City – a chic, indulgent, frothy concoction. Easy on the eyes, we’re talking good looking cast and locales, and super breezy to watch, this romantic comedy is just what you need for a weekend binge in your pajamas. It scored leading actor Lily Collins a nomination for best actress in the comedy category. Read our review here.
Creator: Darren Star
Cast: Lily Collins, Ashley Park, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Kate Walsh, Lucas Bravo, Camille Razat
Streaming on: Netflix

‘Mrs America’

Cate Blanchett plays counter-revolutionary Phyllis Schlafly, the woman who took on Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug, Betty Friedan and co in the fight for ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment in the United States of America. Frankly, Cate Blanchett, nominated for best actress in the limited series category, is reason enough to watch it. But if you need more reasons, there are also sublime performances by Rose Byrne, Tracey Ullman and Uzo Aduba, sharp writing and a groovy soundtrack. Read our review here.
Creator: Dahvi Waller
Cast: Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Uzo Aduba, Sarah Paulson, Tracey Ullman, Margo Martindale, Elizabeth Banks
Streaming on: Disney+ Hotstar

‘The Mandalorian’

Disney+’s flagship series caught attention when it was announced for all the right reasons – baby Yoda. We’re happy to announce that nuanced performances by Pedro Pascal as the titular bounty hunter, compelling storytelling, a great background score and an able supporting cast only elevate this show. The Mandalorian has been nominated for best television series in the drama category. Read our review here.
Creator: Jon Favreau
Cast: Pedro Pascal, Carl Weathers, Rio Hackford, Gina Carano
Streaming on: Disney+ Hotstar

‘The Queen’s Gambit’

Has any show ever made chess look compelling and in such a delightful manner? For us, The Queen’s Gambit, based on the eponymous novel by Walter Tevis, is arguably one of the best shows of 2020.  Superbly written, brilliantly acted and wonderfully shot, this is a show we can happily re-watch. The Queen’s Gambit has scored multiple nominations. Read our review here.
Creators: Scott Frank, Scott Allan, Allan Scott
Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Chloe Pirrie, Bill Camp
Streaming on: Netflix
