You Realise Just How Funny Daily Life Is When You See ‘Gullak’ 2

Following Gullak season one, the Mishra family returns with another series of anecdotes to warm your heart. In their household, things are still the same. Mrs Mishra (Geetanjali Kulkarni) is still generous with her cutting comments, Mr Mishra (Jameel Khan) is still working in the electricity department and Annu (Vaibhav Raj Gupta) and Aman (Harsh Manyar) continue squabbling with each other. This season is all about anecdotes instead of stories and is filled with both relatable humour and uplifting moments.

Nothing much has changed

Welcome back to the Mishra household. As the piggy-bank or the gullak says, nothing much has changed. Mrs Mishra is still cooking Tehri (or disappointment, as they call it), Mr Mishra is still concerned with the electricity bills, Annu, having failed to crack the SSC exams, is looking for favours from a local politician and Aman is busy studying for his board exams.

Each episode is filled with anecdotes, which a large chunk of the Indian audience can instantly relate to. For one, there’s Mr Mishra who is disturbed by the fact that Mrs Mishra’s brother has sent them a wedding invitation that fails to mention ‘sahparivar’. Then there’s Mrs Mishra, who tries to cut corners by adding water to the milk while making kheer. And finally, Annu, who, tired of being rejected by companies for not having enough experience, wonders how he’ll get any experience if nobody hires him. There’s also an episode that focuses on Indian women taking their health for granted, believing that their daily household routines keep them fit. Each episode highlights a theme that our narrator, the gullak or piggy bank, explains at the end.

Memories over money

While the Mishras are a middle-class family, they aren’t fazed by money problems. In fact, they are united by a deep sense of love. Whether it is Mrs Mishra’s sarcasm, the couple’s efforts to try and make Annu more responsible or Annu hounding Aman for not studying for his boards, there is love in all their actions and words. So, while there are plenty of laughs on the show, there are also some poignant moments. As gullak says, they might not be rich but they have a wealth of beautiful stories.

From highlighting the fact that most men cannot find their way around a kitchen to calling out those who have the gall to schedule exams during important cricket matches, the show cleverly and humorously spotlights many little things that are highly prevalent in Indian society. Think PUBG jokes, nosy neighbourhood aunties, kitty parties and the custom of keeping a ‘revenge register’ to keep track of how much money every relative gives you on an important occasion, so that you may return the favour with interest.

As with season one, you will feel as if you’ve been deposited in the midst of an actual middle-class Indian family while watching the show; that’s the power of a great story and clever direction. All in all, this is refreshing, relatable content at its best, aided by flawless performances by the entire cast and a wonderful background score.

If you enjoyed season one, you’re going to love season two. And if you haven’t watched it, you’ll love it regardless. Either way, watch it.
