The makers of HBO’s series based on 2013’s acclaimed video game The Last of Us have cast two Game of Thrones cast members to star. Pedro Pascal (Oberyn Martell) and Bella Ramsey (Lyanna Mormont) will play the lead duo of Joel and Ellie in the post-apocalyptic series.
Pascal’s Joel is a hardened survivor, tormented by the loss of his daughter when a pandemic known as the Cordyceps Brain Infection hit America. Twenty years later, he treks across the pandemic-ravaged country, escorting a girl who represents the last hope for all humanity.
Ramsey’s Ellie is a fourteen-year old orphan who has never known anything but a ravaged world. She struggles with anger at her situation and her longing for a place to belong along. She also grapples with the idea of being humanity’s last hope when she discovers she’s immune to the infection.
The Last of Us takes place 20 years after the destruction of civilisation. Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small task quickly becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must travel across the US and depend on each other for survival. The game is widely regarded to have taken presentation and storytelling in the medium to an entirely new level.
