Is ‘WandaVision’ A Tough Act To Follow For ‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’?

Though it was a project set to explore a pair of MCU movie side characters, the initial expectations for WandaVision were understandably lower than The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The trailers for the series presented us with a vague sitcom-inspired set-up with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and The Vision (Paul Bettany) playing house in the suburbs. It seemed like a silly sitcom tribute that would be irrelevant to the larger MCU, considering Vision was already dead in the movies. However, we now know that this light-hearted presentation in the previews was an effort to keep the show’s secrets under wraps.

That being said, nearly a year without any releases had most Marvel fans craving new content, even if the concept was a bit unusual for the studio. However, WandaVision went on to be a huge success with some crazy twists, turns and movie set-ups.

Next with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Marvel shifts gears to a six-episode limited series that looks like it will play out a lot more like typical Marvel fare. In the series, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) will carry on Captain America’s legacy while attempting to move past Avengers: Endgame and the events leading up to it. The trailers show big action set pieces, buddy cop humour and plenty with two charismatic main characters.

Where WandaVision was a crazy experiment that paid off, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is well within Marvel’s wheelhouse. It would be a mistake to count out Marvel’s ability to hook audiences by going back to releasing the kind of content they are already well-known for.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier releases Friday, March 19 on Disney+ Hotstar.
