The third episode of The Mandalorian introduced Bo-Katan, another Mandalorian and a major character from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, who wielded the Darksaber. The Darksaber, is a black lightsaber that has deep ties to Mandalorian history. The wielder of the Darksaber is the rightful leader of the Mandalorians. The live-action version of Bo-Katan is played by Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff. She also voiced Bo-Katan in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels. The new season has revealed some significant connections between the animated Star Wars shows and The Mandalorian, specifically, a Camelot-esque story of Mandalorian succession.
When Bo-Katan and the other Mandalorians asks the captain if Moff Gideon has the Darksaber, the captain answers “if you’re asking, you already know”. Bo-Katan being unsure about whether Gideon has the weapon means that he didn’t directly force it out of her hands. Bo-Katan likely lost it when the Empire attacked Mandalore during the Clone Wars. Imperial forces led by Gideon laid waste to the Mandalorian home world. Bo-Katan probably lost the artifact in the heat of battle and assumed it came into the possession of the Imperial security officer.
This episode of The Mandalorian clears any doubt that Gideon took possession of the black lightsaber. Bo-Katan’s quest to retrieve the artifact will no doubt be a major plot point in season two. This mission may prove to be a challenging one since, especially since Mando declined to aid her. He has his own quest to complete.
