The main characters of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier meet in episode two. It feels like much of the success of this show rests on the chemistry between Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Falcon and the Winter Soldier exchange banter as they fight enemy super soldiers and it’s delightful to watch. Bucky’s world-weary cynicism plays off of by Sam’s straight-laced nature. Neither lead takes more of the spotlight. This dynamic between them adds levity to the show after a fair amount of brooding in the premier.
Episode two entitled ‘The Star-Spangled Man’ is a sort of transition. It contains a lot of set-up for subsequent episodes, most importantly, the introduction of a man named John Walker (Wyatt Russell), who has been chosen by the government to take up the mantle of Captain America. The titular heroes aren’t too thrilled with the news. If Walker harbours any doubts about whether he’s the man to don the uniform, he doesn’t show them. As a recipient of three Medals of Honor in his illustrious military career, Walker is already acting as if he’s earned Cap’s title.
It also appears that conflict may be brewing between the leads and the government-sponsored Cap, who takes issue with the pair operating independently. To see how this plays out on the show, we’ll have to wait till the next episode drops to Disney+ Hotstar on Friday, April 2. Stay tuned for more of our thoughts on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
