Get ready for some giant robot-monster battles in Pacific Rim: The Black, a new anime series coming to Netflix on Thursday, March 4.
The streamer released a full-length trailer for the series based on the world of 2013’s Pacific Rim from director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham.
The original film is a tribute to Japanese kaiju movies movies such as Godzilla. Kaiju creatures rise from a portal deep in the ocean. Humanity’s last hope against them are giant robots called Jaegers, captained by two pilots who control the bot by entering a state called “the drift,” wherein the pilots mind-meld with each other.
Since the film drew its inspiration from Japanese cinema and anime, the upcoming anime should fit right in with the tone of the movie. The trailer shows blended 2D and 3D animation and outstanding action on a giant scale.
