A Blackout In NYC Sheds Some Light In ‘Only Murders In The Building’

This mystery comedy is centered on three residents of the Arconia, an affluent Upper West apartment building. Charles Haden-Savage (Steven Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) bond over their obsession with Cinda Canning’s (Tina Fey) true-crime podcast and start their own podcast titled ‘Only Murders in the Building’ to solve the suspicious death of a fellow resident.

OMITB…for life

After last week’s filler episode, the show finally returns to glittering form, pun intended. We find out Glitter Guy’s identity (more on that later), and multiple suspects are eliminated. Does that leave us any closer to finding out who killed Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell)? Not entirely, but with two episodes left, we’ll figure it out soon enough. The show continues its hilarious meta commentary via the podcast’s superfans Marv (Daniel Oreskes), Sam (Jaboukie Young-White), Paulette (Ali Stroker) and Grant (Orson Hong). The foursome are worried that season two of the podcast has hit a snag, and after three back-to-back episodes of zero progress, wonder if they should abandon the fandom. Marv is the only one convinced that the Ollie-Mabel trio (Charles is silent) can find Bunny Folger’s killer, and pledges to be a superfan of the podcast for life. Marv also has a theory that Bunny’s death is the work of a serial killer he dubs ‘The Sixth Avenue Slasher (“his MO was simple – choose older women. But younger women could be targets too. Also, men of all ages. It really depended on the day”).

As New York City plunges into a blackout, the trio rush back to the Arconia, and up the endless flights of stairs (no electricity = no elevators) to save Lucy (Zoe Colletti) from Glitter Guy and/or the killer. Lucy has escaped into the Arcatacombs to evade him. The three join the chase and suddenly the Arcatacombs is teeming with athletic activity. In the meanwhile, former suspects and Arconia residents Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) and Nina (Christine Ko) are ruled out due to water-tight alibis. The trio plus Lucy eventually escape whoever is chasing them…only for it to be Marv! The superfan explains that he was aware of the existence of the Arcatacombs and broke in to save Lucy from Glitter Guy. His interference drove GG away and in return, he hopes for a shoutout or appearance on his favourite podcast. Speaking of Glitter Guy, he turns out to be…drumroll…Detective Kreps (Michael Rapaport), Detective Williams’ (DaVine Joy Randolph) co-investigator in the Bunny Folger murder case. Does he have a personal stake in the case or is he taking orders from someone to make a quick buck? Your guess is as good as ours.

A new episode of season two of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ airs every Wednesday on Disney+ Hotstar.
