Fahadh Faasil & Soubin Shahir’s Performances Are The Saving Grace of this Cat-&-Mouse Drama

Malayalam film industry has been seeing some edge-of-the-seat thrillers in recent times. The latest one to join the club is Fahadh Faasil starrer Irul. The film is spooky, dark, and goes through a cat and mouse game but falters somewhere. Directed by Naseef Yusuf Izuddin during the pandemic, Irul also stars Soubin Shahir and
Darshana Rajendran in prominent roles.

Alex and Archana (Soubin Shahir and Darshana Rajendran respectively) go on a weekend getaway, away from their chaotic life. On the way to the hill station, their car breaks down and they are stranded with no phone or means of communication. They seek shelter at a nearby house on the hillside, where they meet a mysterious man living alone in the mansion. They converse about Alex’s maiden thriller novel and its shortcomings and the conversation goes interesting until they find a dead body in the basement of the apartment. There starts the cat and mouse game, and we get to experience something spooky and dark but losing momentum in the run.

The performances save the show

If you are a regular viewer of Malayalam films, it wouldn’t be a surprise to you when we say that Fahadh Faasil is one of the best performers in the field at present. His nuances and acting prowess have been praised time and again by critics and audience alike. In Irul too, he delivers a stunning performance without a glitch. Darshana is yet another talent to look forward to, and in this film, she gives out a convincing act. Soubin is good too, but he is not as convincing enough as Alex who might have done the crime. But Darshana and Fahadh’s performances save the faltering game and make it worth watching.

The cat-and-mouse game

When they find the dead body, Alex realizes that there are a lot of similarities between the body and those that have happened in the past which had become the theme in Alex’s novel. He suspects the stranger while the stranger accuses Alex and the circumstances are against Alex. The cat and mouse game begins there, and there is Archana who is stuck between the two, confused and spooked out reflecting the audience. Who do we favor, and who do we suspect? We think it is predictable, but with two different perspectives we are confused and that is a win-win situation for the makers.

Irul is technically brilliant

Irul might not be a masterpiece but it is a vivid experience. With an interesting way of storytelling, Jomon T John’s intelligent play with his camera, Sreerag Saji’s compelling background score, and Shameer Muhammed’s brilliant cuts, along with a color tone that matches the theme, Irul is an interesting watch. It is visually rich, spooking you out at places, and delivers an experience that is not bad.

WATCH OR NOT
Irul is a decent watch and can be experienced alone or with family or friends. It keeps you hooked till the end, no matter how faltering it may seem and that is the success of the makers. Watch it for some good performances too.
