Teddy, starring Arya and Sayesha is only the second Indian film to use live-action motion capture animation by an Indian graphic company. after Soundarya Rajnikanth’s Kochadaiyaan. Directed by Shakthi Soundararajan, Teddy follows the story of Shiva (played by Arya) a loner genius who struggles to integrate himself into and interact with society and people. When he crosses paths with a walking talking Teddy bear possessing the soul of Srividya (played by Sayeesha) who is a victim of an elaborate medical scam, the duo must navigate dangerous forces across nations to bring the perpetrators to justice. Teddy is inspired by the Hollywood film Ted which stars Mark Walhberg who partners with a teddy bear, but Shakthi Soundararajan only borrows the concept of the characters while creating a different plot.
An action-packed animated entertainer
Teddy is a fast-paced action thriller right from the get go and has all the elements of a wholesome entertainer. The animation is competently conceived and there are some amusing and lighthearted moments between both protagonists that work well and are interesting to watch. Arya as the stoic and stiff introvert does a good job and blends into the role nicely. The film also works as a vehicle to showcase his action skills which he uses to good effect .
The meandering script and plot is the film’s failure
Teddy unfortunately suffers due to its rather inept screenplay that leaves too many plot lines and situations to mere convenience. We see huge fights erupting in hospitals. We see a giant teddy bear walking across cities and countries with no one questioning its incredulity. We see Arya’s character easily hacking into private and confidential portals to gain information. There are too many quick fix solutions and conclusions that lead to a highly dramatic climax that doesn’t seem to tie the loose ends in a believable manner. This is where the film’s promise is wasted. Even the friendship between the teddy bear and the protagonist is developed hastily without a proper arc. The periphery characters including Satish, Karunakaran and others do not have much to do and feel contrived.
WATCH OR NOT
Teddy is a film that entertains in parts but could have been a much better watch if it had taken the route of a complete family entertainer maybe targeted towards children. But in trying to involve a sinister plot, the film doesn’t do full justice. Watch it for 2 hours of good passing of time.
