Can Prime Video’s ‘Invincible’ Join The Superhero Team With ‘The Boys’?

It seems as though Prime Video has been looking to secure its place as the go-to platform for comic book adaptations with more mature themes than Marvel fare. The Boys’ reception definitely proved that there’s demand for this type of content. Mature superhero shows could be the niche for Amazon to compete against platforms like Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar.

Invincible tells the story of Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), a teenager who lives a normal life except for one small detail: his father, Nolan Grayson (J.K. Simmons), is Omni-Man, the world’s most powerful superhero. Soon after his 17th birthday, Mark begins to develop powers of his own. Under the hero name Invincible, he starts to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Based on the work of Robert Kirkman, writer of ‘The Walking Dead’ comics, Invincible is the latest graphic novel adaptation from Prime Video. Judging by the first three episodes streaming now, the animated series is an excellent adaptation that brings Kirkman’s work to life on the screen. The show looks like Corey Walker and Ryan Ottley’s art in action. There are well-developed characters and the writing is hilarious and heartfelt. The script is supported by a stacked voice cast of John Hamm, Lauren Cohan and J.K. Simmons among others.

Adapting Invincible as an animated show allowed the makers the opportunity to reflect the violence in the original comic. There’s dismemberment, crushed skulls and broken bones, making the animated series a visceral experience.

With its brutal action sequences, emotional moments and subversive humour, Invincible might be on its way to becoming Prime Video’s next superhero hit. We’re definitely looking forward to seeing more of this new stellar addition to the platform’s superhero catalogue. Stay tuned for more on the series here.
