8 Shows To Add To Your Watchlist If You Loved ‘Ginny & Georgia’

Ginny & Georgia, one of Netflix’s latest offerings (pictured above), is a dramedy about a mother-daughter duo who view the world in completely different ways. Fifteen-year-old Ginny Miller is seemingly more mature and level-headed than her 30-year-old mother Georgia. The two live in a town in New England with 9-year-old Austin, Georgia’s son and Ginny’s half-brother.

If you’ve already binged the show and are now looking to scratch that Ginny & Georgia itch, here are eight shows, featuring families, love and drama, that might help.

‘Gilmore Girls’

This classic series follows the mother-daughter duo of Lorelai and Rory. Lorelai is an independent single mother who shares a very close bond with her daughter. She runs a charming inn and is constantly at a war of words with her mother, who wants Rory to be brought up in a completely different manner.
Creator: Amy Sherman-Palladino
Cast: Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Melissa McCarthy, Keiko Agena, Scott Patterson

‘Jane The Virgin’

This is yet another feel-good show that’s all about family and relationships. The story focuses on Jane Gloriana Villanueva, a young girl living with her mother and her abuela (grandmother). Jane, an aspiring writer, makes a promise to her abuela that she will not lose her virginity before she gets married. But when Jane is accidentally inseminated, everything begins to change. This show beautifully captures the open relationship between Jane and her mother, Xiomara, who had Jane when she was very young and Jane and her grandmother, who played an important role in her upbringing.

‘Little Fires Everywhere’

Based on a book of the same name that made it to Reese Witherspoon’s book club, the show offers plenty of mother-daughter drama. The story revolves around the interconnected fates of the Richardson family and an enigmatic mother-daughter duo who arrive in town and disrupt their lives. Elena Richardson is organised and a seemingly perfect mother while Mia is a free-spirited artist and a single mom. The duo may be vastly different, but fate brings them together.

‘Modern Family’

This comedy series spotlights three families living in LA. While they live separately, they’re each interrelated through Jay Pritchett. He has a second wife, a stepson, an infant, two adult children and grandchildren, meaning there’s plenty of chaos and drama unfolding in every episode.

Seasons: 11

‘Mom’

This sitcom focuses on Christy, a single mom whose newfound sobriety gives her a chance to pull her life together. But when her estranged mother, also a recovering addict, comes back into her life, Christy must try and get along with her. Christy tries hard not to repeat the mistakes her own mother made, with her two children, all while dealing with crazy relationships, an irresponsible ex-husband and of course, her mother who can be full of surprises.

‘One Day At A Time’

Inspired by Norman Lear’s eponymous 1975 series, this comedy-drama follows the life of a newly single army veteran Penelope and her Cuban-American family. Apart from dealing with problems at work, Penelope must see to her two vastly different but strong-willed children and placate her old-school mother, who’s an expert at throwing a fit. Penelope then, is both a mother and a daughter who tries to juggle both these roles and does a pretty good job at making it look easy! Read more about the show here.

Cast: Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez
Seasons: 4

‘Schitt’s Creek’

This is the story of the Roses – a perfectly imperfect once-wealthy family that falls on hard times. A dysfunctional family drama, the show follows the Roses as they move to Schitt’s Creek, a town they once bought as a joke, that they’re now forced to live in. The mother-daughter duo on this show, Moira and Alexis, are awkward and funnily distant with each other, but this gradually begins to change with time, as do the unconventional family dynamics.
