Fans of Netflix’s Regency-era drama The Crown (read our review here) have been looking forward to season four ever since it was announced. After all, this would be the season in which the People’s Princess, Lady Diana Spencer makes her entrance. Everyone who’s followed the lives of The House of Windsor, or world news, are aware that the fairytale romance between Prince Charles and Princess Diana doesn’t end with a happily ever after. In fact, their rocky relationship, which lasted till Diana’s tragic death in a car accident in 1997, has been one of the most scrutinised celebrity relationships.
Naturally, it is the highlight of season four as we see Diana (Emma Corrin) and Charles (Josh O’Connor) embark on an awkward courtship followed by a rapidly degenerating marriage. So it’s no surprise that the royal family is none too pleased with it. While speaking to The Daily Mail, palace insiders confided that “(the) Duke of Cambridge feels that both his parents are being exploited and being presented in a false, simplistic way to make money.” Charles is portrayed as egotistical, callous and self-serving while the makers have focused on Diana’s naiveté and struggle with bulimia and fitting in with the royal family. Friends of the Prince of Wales have accused Netflix of “exploiting the royal family’s pain for financial gain and presenting fiction as fact.” One palace source went on to add that the makers of the series haven’t taken into account that the scars from Charles and Diana’s bitter split haven’t healed. They said, “These events are not the history of 100 or even 50 years ago. The pain is still raw and not enough time has elapsed.”
However, while the royal family may have no love lost for the series, the public can’t seem to get enough of it. Twitterverse exploded with love for the late princess and what is easily the most intense season of the show. Here are a few of the best reactions.

Imagine being a royal courtier & spending 20+ years trying to save Prince Charles’s image only for #TheCrown to hammer it all away a couple of episodes into Season 4 😂😂
