The galaxy-travelling bounty hunter and his adorable sidekick Baby Yoda are finally back for a second outing on Disney+ Hotstar’s The Mandalorian. Here’s a quick recap of the third episode of of the season.
Fun fact: This episode was directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, who also directed season one’s fourth episode. Her father, Ron Howard, directed Solo (2018).
After being stranded in last episode, the Razor Crest crash lands on a watery planet. Mando and Baby Yoda are saved by other Mandalorians, Bo-Katan Kryze, Koska Reeves and Axe Woves. These new additions to the cast are played by Katee Sackhoff from Battlestar Galactica, Mercedes Varnado, also known as WWE superstar Sasha Banks and Simon Kassianides from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. A lot of Star Wars lore is dropped on viewers this episode. Our Mando learns that Bo-Katan once wielded the Darksaber, a special lightsaber tied to the history of Mandalore. This weapon united the Mandalorian clans and made her their leader (it’s like the Mandalorian Excalibur). She now seeks to get the saber back from the clutches Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) and reunite the scattered guild. Since the imperial security officer Gideon has been after Mando and Baby Yoda, Mando and his new crew have a common enemy. They hatch a plan to storm an Imperial Freighter for information.
The big bad
Gideon (in his first appearance this season) orders the captain of the freighter to kill the crew and crash the ship to prevent the Mandalorians from boarding. In an amazing action set piece, the Mandos storm the freighter and take control away from its captain. When team Mando attempts to interrogate him for information on Gideon, he commits suicide, leaving them with no leads on the villain.
