Falcon & The Winter Soldier’s Super Bowl trailer showed lots of exciting footage. However, there’s a mystery that the show appears to be playing close to the chest. There’s a new Captain America shown in all the show’s promotional videos, but only in shots from behind. The footage in the new trailer doubled down on the frenemy dynamic between Bucky and Sam, but appears to be hiding Steve Rogers’ official replacement. Avengers: Endgame signaled that Falcon would take up the mantle of Captain America. Contrary to this there appears to be a new guy in the suit, bearing the iconic shield and high-fiving people at football games.
The question of who will carry forward Captain America’s legacy will definitely be a driving force behind the narrative of Falcon & The Winter Soldier. It appears Sam, the heir apparent, isn’t the only candidate. In the comics, the US government had their own replacement in John Walker, better known as US Agent. Wyatt Russell (Overlord, Lodge 49) has been cast to play US Agent in the series, but the trailers and marketing materials for the show have obscured the character or left him out completely, focusing instead on Sam and Bucky. The reason for this mystery might only be revealed when Falcon & The Winter Soldier premiers on Friday, March 19 on Disney+ Hotstar.
