Based on the work of Robert Kirkman, writer of ‘The Walking Dead’ comics, Prime Video’s Invincible tells the story of Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), a teenager who lives a normal life except for one small detail: his father, Nolan Grayson (J.K. Simmons), is Omni-Man, the world’s most powerful superhero. Soon after his 17th birthday, Mark begins to develop powers of his own. Under the hero name Invincible, he starts to follow in his father’s footsteps.
While the whole series is a sharp and well-written deconstruction of superhero stories, there was one particular character that stood out: Demon Detective Damien Darkblood. Part of the appeal of Invincible, both the comics and its animated adaptation, is the complete willingness to throw its audience into the deep end of its concepts, whether science fiction or fantasy. While the series leans towards sci-fi, the character of Damien Darkblood is straight out of a fantasy. Darkblood’s motivation and premise as a character is so simple and yet so compelling, we’d love to see him in his own show. He’s a demon detective who escaped hell and works to solve crimes to bring justice to others to prolong his time on Earth and save his own soul. Watching him appear to get closer to solving the massacre that makes up the inciting incident in the show is one of the standout subplots of the series. Especially considering where the show left this plotline, it’s one that will definitely leave the audience wanting more. We’re wondering what could be better than an episodic series about a demon solving crimes on Earth to save himself.
