After a year with no new releases from Marvel Studios, fans have eagerly awaited the release of WandaVision, the first two episodes of which dropped to Disney+ Hotstar today. These two episodes are as strange and experimental as anything we’ve ever seen out the MCU. The show is weird, but it’s also fascinating, heart-warming and hilarious.
The series follows Marvel superheroes, Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) as they attempt to live as a normal suburban couple after the events of Avengers: Endgame. This is presented in the show’s first two episodes in the style of a ’60s black and white American sitcom like I Love Lucy. The episode itself is a charming homage with endearingly silly humour, featuring two beloved MCU characters. However, we get the sense that all of this might simply be an illusion through subtle glitches like coloured objects in a black and white world and its general underlying surreal nature. Halfway through episode one, there’s even a commercial for a toaster made by Stark Industries, a company known for its advanced military tech. This uncanny aspect of the series brings to mind the films of director David Lynch.
When you think back to the first Iron Man movie (2008) and consider the fact that 12 years later, we’re watching a television spinoff from its universe that presents itself like a classic sitcom, it boggles the mind. We can’t wait to see what subsequent episodes of the series have in store.
WandaVision‘s first two episodes are currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. Stay tuned to Buzz for more on the series as new episodes drop.
