Meet Joe Goldberg, your friendly neighbourhood psychopath. Played by Penn Badgely, Joe is a deceptively charming New York City bookstore manager who falls for women and gets dangerously obsessed with them. Based on the eponymous novel by Caroline Kepnes, ‘You’ follows Joe’s obsession with NYU grad Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) and later, aspiring chef Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti). With season three dropping on Friday, October 15, we thought we’d give you a quick recap of seasons one and two.
Season one starts off with Joe falling for Beck after a charming meet-cute at his bookstore. Then, we see how Joe gets progressively obsessive, as he starts stalking Beck, both on social media and in person. His dangerous side is revealed slowly as we see Joe integrate himself in Beck’s group of friends. He then kills Beck’s best friend Peach (Shay Mitchell) and ex-boyfriend Benji (Lou Taylor Pucci), as he considers them threats to his impending relationship with Beck. The two eventually start dating, and Beck starts attending therapy to cope with Peach’s death. She slowly grows suspicious of Joe and eventually finds a box containing Peach and Benji’s belongings in Joe’s bathroom. Joe then kills her and frames her therapist (John Stamos) for her murder.
Season two sees Joe move to Los Angeles, replete with a new identity where he befriends sisters Delilah (Carmela Zumbado) and Ellie Alves (Jenna Ortega), and Forty Quinn (James Scully) among others. When he meets Love, Joe slips back to his old ways and decides no cost is too high to make his relationship with Love succeed. In an unexpected twist, we learn that Love is Joe’s match made in hell. She has meticulously planned to make Joe fall for her, and left behind a body count (including Delilah and Joe’s ex-girlfriend Candace), to rival Joe’s.
