Did Zack Snyder Ditch The Widescreen Format For His Justice League?

After years of relentless demands by fans, the Snyder cut or Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally ready to stream on 18th March worldwide. For the fans in India, you can catch the movie on BookMyShow Stream. Justice League has always been Zack Snyder‘s dream project after he worked on bringing the DCEU to us with movies like Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Because of some personal reasons, he could not complete Justice League and Joss Whedon had to take over much to the dismay of the fans. Warner Brothers has spared no expense when it comes to helping Zack Snyder present his Justice League in the format he wished. They have approved reshoots and are even releasing the movie in 1.33:1 aspect ratio instead of the regular widescreen version. If you are wondering what is this aspect ratio and why Justice League is releasing in this format, read on.

What  is 1.33:1?

The 1.33:1 aspect ratio is squarish and similar to an IMAX screen. A lot of superhero movies usually only have some scenes that are in this format and you can only make out the difference when watching in IMAX. When you are watching Zack Snyder’s Justice League at home, you will see two black bars on either side of the screen instead of the usual top and bottom. This is not a glitch and Zack Snyder intended us to view his masterpiece in this format.

Why is Zack Snyder’s Justice League in this ratio?

Zack Snyder is a huge fan of the IMAX format and he had even considered shooting the movie using an IMAX camera. Because of technical difficulties, he could not do that but he set the frames in such a way that IMAX viewers can enjoy a full experience. “My intent was to have the movie, the entire film, play in a gigantic 1:43 aspect ratio on a giant IMAX screen. Superheroes tend to be, as figures, they tend to be less horizontal. Maybe Superman when he’s flying. But when he’s standing, he’s more of a vertical. Everything is composed and shot that way, and a lot of the restoration is sort of trying to put that back. Put these big squares back. … It’s a completely different aesthetic. It’s just got a different quality and one that is unusual. No one’s doing that. ” said Snyder at the Justice Con last year. Now that Zack Snyder has the opportunity to show us his unedited version, it makes sense for even the aspect ratio to be as per his vision.
