As we step into a new year, it's time to retrospect the year that is gone! And being a movie buff that we are, let's look back at the films of the year – the good, the bad, the ugly – all of it. While decoding the year, we found out that what marked the year was a mixed bag of some good films; a handful of exceptionally great ones; several utterly unremarkable scripts, and a few highly awaited ones that bombed at the box office. The three Khans of Bollywood dominated the year once again with their films, Fan, Sultan and Dangal. However films like Kapoor & Sons, Dear Zindagi, Udta Punjab, Neerja, Airlift, Nil Battey Sannata, Aligarh and Parched deserve special mention just for their sheer cinematic brilliance.

From Highest Rated Movies of 2016 to the Under rated ones, let's look at the year 2016, that was in Bollywood.

1. The Must Watch Movies
The year witnessed some path-breaking performances, gripping narratives and above all, movies that did not shy away from pushing the “so-called” Bollywood boundaries. Bollywood surely became a little brave in its storytelling. Films like Parched, Pink, Aligarh, Dear Zindagi and Nil Battey Sannatta broke away from the regular mainstream Bollywood cinema and became the must-watch movies of the year.

2. The Highest Grossing Movies
Demonetization didn't deter people from flocking in the cinemas to watch their favorite movies. Movies like Rustom, Airlift, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Dangal , Sultan, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Fan and Shivaay made moolah at the box office. So many movies have made it to the 100 Crore club last year.

3. The Duds
There were some much-hyped big budget movies that proved to be duds at the box office, contrary to the expectations. The films that turned out to be the biggest disappointment of the year were Rock On 2, Mirzya, Fitoor, Baar Baar Dekho, Befikre, Raaz and Azhar. Not just in terms of collection, these movies were the least user rated movies as well.

4. The Underrated Movies
We witnessed some gem of a movies in 2016, that were not able to cash in at the box office, but will always be remembered for their cinematic brilliance. Films like Sarabjit, Neerja, Saala Khadoos, Phobia, Pink, Parched, Wazir and Aligarh were critically acclaimed for their brilliance in almost every department of film-making. These were undoubtedly the best movies of 2016.

Let's hope this new year brings in new opportunities for Bollywood to dazzle audiences once again with fantastical, action-packed, and moving stories.
