Indian cinema was at its best in 1950s and 60s. The cinema of this time was marked with a distinct voice of country, just free from clutches of a 200 year foreign rule. Spirits were running high and the fate of Hindi film industry was changing. With the rise of great actor-directors Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt, Indian Cinema reached its pinnacle during this decade. These were the glory years for Hindi cinema when some of the landmark films in the history were made and gained national and international fame.
Let's look at five classic films from this era especially the movies in 1954 that you can still watch and get mesmerised:
1. Aar Paar (1954)
This was a light-hearted movie by Guru Dutt . Considered as a serious film maker, Aar Paar gave him an opportunity to show his comic side to his fans. He also acted in this film and it was His first successful film as a lead actor where he was seen in a comic light-hearted role. This film established him as a director to reckon with.
2. Boot Polish
Produced by Raj Kapoor and directed by Prakash Arora, the movie revolves around two pre-teen kids who are left in the care of an evil aunt and start polishing shoes for a living against her will. The masterpiece also won the Filmfare Award for Best Movie.
3. Mirza Ghalib
Starring Bharat Bhushan and Suraiya in the lead roles, Mirza Ghalib was a Hindi and Urdu language biographical film, based on the life of the famous Mughal poet, Mirza Ghalib. The film was directed by Sohrab Modi and received great acclaim upon its release. Mirza Ghalib won the President's Gold Medal for the All India Best Feature film. Suraiya was highly appreciated for her singing of Ghalib's gazals and her acting.
Directed by Satyen Bose, Jagriti won the Filmfare Best Movie Award in 1954. The lead actor of the film, Abhi Bhattacharya also won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance. This movie is known for its classic patriotic songs (Aao Bachhon Tumhe Dikhaaye), written by one of the greatest Indian poets and lyricists of all time Kavi Pradeep and set to music by Hemant Kumar.
Amar was a psychological drama featuring Dilip Kumar , Madhubala and Nimmi in the lead roles. It was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan. The film won the Filmfare Best Sound Award that year.
