Every soccer fan in India is eagerly waiting for the month of October, when once again the slogan “Let's Football” will be heard in unison from all the corners of the country. Indian Super League, one of India's most popular Football leagues, founded in 2013, is coming again this year with much pomp and show. The third season of ISL is all set to start on 1 st of October in Guwahati. Founded with the objective to develop the game of Football across the country in a systematic and holistic manner, the league has already achieved its objective to a certain extent with its inaugural season itself.
In this season too, 8 teams/franchises, representing 8 Indian cities, will be seen competing against each other. The teams are – Atletico De Kolkata, co-owned by Sourav Ganguly, Chennaiyin FC, owned by Abhishek Bachchan and Vita Dani, Delhi Dynamos FC, owned by DEN TV Networks, FC Goa, co-owned by Videocon, FC Pune City, co-owned by Salman Khan, Kerala Blasters FC, co-owned by Sachin Tendulkar, Mumbai City FC, co-owned by Ranbir Kapoor and Northeast United FC, co-owned by John Abraham. Just like the previous season, this time also the league is expected to be more starry and bigger than ever.
Each team will have a Marquee player and at least 8 foreign players. The remaining will be Indian players. ISL provided a platform where, for the first time in the history of Indian Football, globally renowned football players will be playing alongside the best Indian Footballers. This is a great attempt by the founders to elevate Indian Football to an International level. There is a lot of enthusiasm for Football in India, but for the first time, with the creation of ISL, this enthusiasm and talent is being channelised in the right direction. The mission is to become a global Football power and qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Indian Super League is modelled along the lines of successful cricket league in India, called Indian Premier League. It was very unlikely that, in a country where cricket is considered a religion, a sport like Football will be cheered so enthusiastically and an exclusive Football league will be so popular and accepted by the people so well. Last year, the winner was Chennayin, who defeated FC Goa in the finals. Let's see who takes the trophy this time. Fingers crossed!
India, let's hear it out for Football again!
