Inaugurated in 2008, D.Y Patil Stadium is considered as one of the best stadiums in the country, designed by India’s leading architect Hafeez Contractor. It is a stadium with the tallest mast in the country and largest LED screens with modern state-of-art architecture, that is earthquake resistant and has first-rate safety facilities like the evacuation system. It has a capacity of 55,000 spectators which makes it the ninth largest cricket ground of India. To make sure each spectator has a comfortable and clear viewing experience, the entire ground has bucket seats and cantilever roofs that eliminate the need for columns. There are other facilities also in D.Y Patil stadium which includes 9 tennis hard courts, 4 indoor badminton courts and an Olympic sized swimming pool.
In 2008, the stadium served as the home ground for Mumbai Indians. It hosted 3 IPL matches for the Mumbai Indians and also got the opportunity to host the 2008 Indian Premier League Final. In 2014, football action unveils for the first time in the stadium, when the ISL franchise, Mumbai City FC chose the D.Y Patil Stadium as their home ground. All the home matches of Mumbai City FC were played here. In fact, the stadium also hosted the final of Hero ISL 2014 between Atletico de Kolkata and Kerala Blaster FC. Another big sporting event the venue will soon going to host is the FIFA Under-17 World Cup.
