Ever since cinema became a source of entertainment, its relationship with theatre has always been one of give and take. We have plenty of old school movies that are inspired by theatrical productions. However, it’s not too often that we see superhit movies come back to life on the stage. More than half a century ago, Bollywood witnessed what can be considered its ultimate magnum opus. One of the most famed and most expensive movies in Bollywood history became a milestone moment of Indian cinema. That movie is Mughal-E-Azam and, back in 2017, it got the ultimate tribute with it’s own on-stage musical adaptation.
The Mughal-E-Azam play is directed by Feroz Abbas Khan and is equally as extravagant and magnificent the legendary movie. The classical movie turned stage musical drew audiences from far and wide in its first season who all wanted to witness what might be India’s biggest Broadway-like spectacle on stage. Serving as a testament to the charm of Mughal-E-Azam, the musical opened to houseful shows and amazing reviews.
What really makes the Mughal-E-Azam play as iconic as the original movie are the fact that it is as extravagant as its on-screen counterpart. Everything from the stunning sets to the costumes by Manish Malhotra are nothing short of magical. Trained by Broadway experts, the talented cast croons the timeless songs from the film that are presented with new compositions in a new avatar.
Feroz Abbas Khan’s Mughal-e-Azam will now return to the big stage on popular demand of audiences who could not get enough of it. Indian theatre’s path-breaking production will return to the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Delhi from 6th April onwards.
