Anupam Kher is easily one of the best Bollywood actors of our generation. From being a comedian to a villain to a father or grandfather on screen, Anupam Kher has done it all. He has such a range in his acting repertoire that is unmatchable and really commendable. The actor has bagged five Filmfare awards so far and has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Shree by the Govt. of India. At the time when Indian films were largely becoming formulaic with its clichéd ‘hero-heroine-romance’ theme, the actor rose to prominence as a performer. He is probably one of the few actors who has started his Bollywood career playing a 60 something retired middle class man in Mahesh Bhatt's Saaransh in 1984.

As the actor celebrates his 60th birthday today, here's 5 memorable performances of Anupam Kher which are not less than cinematic brilliance.

1. Saaransh
Starting your Bollywood career playing a 60-year old man (when you are just 28) really needs guts, conviction and courage. Anupam Kher played a retired middle class man in his debut movie, Saaransh in 1984. The role was so powerful and Anupam Kher's brilliant performance made this Mahesh Bhatt movie a classic.

2. Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara
This National Award-Winning film is one of the best works of Anupam Kher ever. The film peeps into the mind of an aged man, Professor Uttam Chaudhary (played by Anupam Kher) who believes he had mistakenly shot the Mahatma. The film talks of Alzheimer's disease, an issue that hadn't been tackled on Hindi screen before. It also featured Urmila Matondkar as Kher's daughter.

3. Khosla Ka Ghosla
Anupam Kher delivered an impeccable performance in the film where he played a middle class old man who loses his land to cunning a property dealer, played by Boman Irani. Kher was at his venerable best in this film.

4. Special 26
Directed by Neeraj Pandey, Special 26 was yet another movie of Anupam Kher in which he performed brilliantly and flawlessly. His role was laden with wonderful layers of emotions, quirks, authority and vulnerability. The film featured Akshay Kumar in the lead role.

5. A Wednesday
A one of its kind movie, A Wednesday had Anupam Kher and Naseeruddin Shah in the lead roles. Helmed by Neeraj Pandey again, the film questions the injustice done to the common man and his anger against the authorities who have failed to put an end to these terror attacks. While Naseeruddin played the role of an unnamed common man in the film, Anupam Kher portrayed the character of an about-to-be retired police commissioner.
