The Coal India Hockey India League has been a huge success in India and has helped popularise the sport across the country. Apart from being a great spectacle for sport fanatics and players, it is also a great model which is facilitating the growth of the sport. The Coal India HIL has already hosted four successful seasons, and each edition has seen different Champions from different cities and franchises. The 2016 edition saw a 40% increase in viewership over the last season of the Hockey India League. Also to pique the interest of the players and franchises in the past two seasons, the Hockey India League has regularly increased the prize money for the tournament. They have always kept the trend up where we witnessed the highest purse in hockey with over Rs. 5.8 crores in the pool last year.

The opening game of the 5th edition was held in Mumbai, between the host team Dabang Mumbai and Ranchi Rays where they scripted a dramatic 3-3 draw in a nerve-gripping thriller.

After 8 days of play, Dabang Mumbai is still topping the charts with 12 points followed by Kalinga Lancers and Ranchi Rays with 10 points each. The league stage will be featuring 30 matches from January 21 to February 22, and the four knockout matches including the two semi-finals.

The final will be played over the weekend of February 26 in Mohali The Jaypee Punjab Warriors Stadium, the home of the defending champions Punjab Warriors. The next two matches will feature Dabang Mumbai against Delhi Waveriders on 30th January and against Kalinga Lancers on 31st.
