Plays have always been an integral part of our culture. We all enjoy them and look forward to groundbreaking storytelling whenever we are looking forward to catching a play. In spite of the many plays happening all over the country, there is one city in India that still commands the most respect when it comes to plays. The city that we are hinting at is Kolkata. For years now, the city continues to the be the epicenter of plays the exceed anything that’s out there out there in terms of sheer quality. Let’s take a walk through some of the plays that you can catch if you happen to be in the city of Kolkata in the coming days.

Machhi Machhi is a play that takes inspiration from the Flies, by Jean-Paul Sartre, who happens to be one of early influencers of what we have come to known as existentialist writing. It wouldn't be a stretch to call the man one of the more prominent existentialist writers in the world. As a movement, the genre explored issues that were deemed to be outside the moral or scientific constraints. The issues generally revolved around the experience that the individual experiences. The Files demonstrates the ideas presented by the existentialism by retelling the Greek myth of Electra and Orestes.

Bandish A tale that takes you on a journey that two sisters had to endure. One is a nautanki singer while the other a baithak singer. The play takes you all that they had to endure. Both performers take a trip through memory lane and as they re-live their days, they also traverse through the times when they had to stand- up for what’s right, slap British officers and run away from leechy zamindars. As the nostalgia rises a realization dawns, the memories are more than instances from the past. They are what we have come to call life.

Barff The play is set in the picturesque Kashmir during the onslaught of winter. Barff is a thriller that is set into motion on an uneventful night. The play takes you into the lives of desperate parents of an ailing child and that of an unsuspecting doctor. The resulting conflict makes us question the different facets of truth and how truth can differ based on personal experiences.

Isn’t that an amazing list right there. Obviously, you might be wondering if there are more plays happening in the city. Well, yes there are and you should check them out on our website.
