The 10th Vijay Awards Honours The Best of Tamil Cinema in 2017

The 10th edition of the Vijay Awards was held on 3rd June, honouring the best that Tamil cinema had to offer last year. The critics as well as audience choice awards were handed to some deserving candidates for their exemplary works in Tamil films last year. The ceremony was held in Chennai featuring many of the most popular celebrities from the Tamil film industry.

The action-thriller Vikram Vedha stole the show with four wins including Pushkar-Gayathri for Best Director and Best Screenplay, Vijay Sethupathi for Best Male Actor, and Sam CS for Best Background Music. Another action-thriller Mersal came close with three wins from the audience choice awards including Favourite Film, Atlee for Favourite Director, and ‘Aalaporaan Thamizhan’ for Favourite Song. The romance film Kaatru Veliyidai also boasted three wins with Ravi Verman for Best Cinematography, AR Rahman for Best Music Director, and Brindha for Best Dance Choreographer.

Other honours went to the socio-political drama Aruvi for Best Film starring Aditi Bindal who took home the Best Female Debut. Another award-winning debut was from Director Lokesh Kanagaraj for Maanagaram. The award for the Best Editor also went to Philomin Raj for Maanagaram. The superstar actress Nayanthara took home the critics’ as well as audience choice awards for her acting (Best Female Actor and Favourite Heroine).

The biggest honour of the night, the Lifetime Achievement Award, went to Sivakumar who is known for his many successful films including Annakili, Rosaappo Ravikkai Kaari, Vandichakkaram and Sindhu Bhairavi.
