On this day in 1998, a poignant crime drama released, which would later achieve cult status. Ram Gopal Varma directed this masterpiece, which starred actors that were not very well known at the time. The film is about the grim world of organized crime in Mumbai or underworld. Satya comes to Mumbai to find a job and makes friends with Bhiku Mhatre and that’s how he gets embroiled in the gangs of the underworld.

Newcomer at the time, JD Chakravarthy played the titular role, Satya. “Mumbai ka king” Bhiku Mhatre was played by Manoj Bajpai, Kallu Mama was played by Saurabh Shukla while the female lead opposite Chakravarthy was played by Urmilla Matondkar.
The music by Vishal Bhardwaj and Sandeep Chowta did the soundtrack for the film and it is fresh in the audience’s minds even today, after two whole decades.
Did you know that Sushant Singh Rajput appeared in a feature film for the first time in Satya? He plays the role of “Pakya”. Hollywood director Danny Boyle once mentioned in a TV interview that he has watched Satya to get a sense of Mumbai’s underworld for his film Slumdog Millionaire.
