5 Best Biopics Made in Bollywood

Bollywood has increasingly been making more biopics than ever. There is a biopic that releases every month. Don’t believe us? Let’s take a look at all the biopics Bollywood made in 2018: Padmaavat (January), Pad Man (February), Raid (March), Omerta (April), Raazi (May), Sanju (June), Soorma (July), and the upcoming Gold (August). Sure, not all of these movies may be classified under ‘biopic’ but they are certainly based on real stories.

So if you enjoy movies based on the lives of inspirational people, here are the five biopics you must watch:

The Dirty Picture

Directed by Milan Luthria, this R-rated film was designed on the life of South Indian actress Silk Smitha, who was popular for her erotic roles. Vidya Balan took on the lead role, making it one of the best performances of her career.


A Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao collaboration, this film was based on the life of human rights activist Shahid Azmi. Both the director and the actor won a National Award for the brilliant portrayal of the lawyer’s life.

Paan Singh Tomar

Featuring Irrfan Khan in the titular role, this Tigmanshu Dhulia film focused on the story of the gold medal-winning soldier from the Indian army, who later became a renowned bandit in the Chambal Valley.


A 1997 film by Shyam Benegal, this one was based on the memoirs of the well-known Marathi stage and screen actress, Hansa Wadkar. Smita Patil embodied the role in the film that also starred Amol Palekar, Anant Nag, Naseeruddin Shah, and Amrish Puri.



Directed by Ram Madhvani, this film was based on the brave act of Neerja Bhanot, who saved the passengers of the Pan Am Flight 73 hijack in Karachi. Sonam Kapoor played the character so brilliantly, she won the IIFA, Filmfare, and National Film Award.
