Written by Rochell Pereira

People usually go to see movies for the entertainment value, but sometimes the most powerful movies can be the ones with sad endings. Bollywood has many such movies that are even more impactful because there isn’t a happy ending in the end. Here are five of the best ones:

Neerja (2016)

This biopic is based on a real incident, and it showed us the tragic end of the heroic Neerja Bhanot, who dies while protecting children from the gunfire of the terrorists. The film also received praise both from the critics and the audiences as it was a tribute to the real-life Neerja.

Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013)

This Bollywood film was based on one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays – Romeo and Juliet. Its end is just as tragic as the play it was based on as the star-crossed lovers Ram and Leela shoot each other and die in the end.

Rang De Basanti (2006)

This film revolves around five friends who act as freedom fighters in a documentary being filmed. When one of their friends who is an Air Force pilot dies because of the corrupt Defence Minister, they are inspired by the freedom fighters and vow to bring justice, but unfortunately, they die while trying to take over a radio station to air their truth.

Rockstar (2011)

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, this film had Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. The film follows the rise of Janardhan Jakhar a.k.a. JJ or Jordan as he becomes a rockstar, but even when he reaches the heights of fame, nothing can make up for the loss of his beloved Heer.

Devdas (2002)

This Sanjay Leela Bhansali film was adapted from the famous novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It had Shah Rukh Khan playing the titular role of a man who returns from London to marry the love of his life but is forbidden to do so by his family which drives him to alcoholism and eventually, his death.

These are just some of the Bollywood movies with sad endings, and there are many more movies like these which are also equally impactful.
