Written by Chavi Pande

India has a very rich history and Bollywood has made many films that draw from it. Whether it’s from the time that the country was under British rule or events from more recent times after the independence, or something that’s much further in the past, Bollywood has made movies that cover many aspects of history. These Bollywood movies on history are some of the best ever made and not only do they show a part of India that we might not know much about, but they are also quite entertaining. Here are some of the top Bollywood movies on history:

Padmaavat (2018)

This period drama was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and starred Deepika Padukone as the Rajput queen, Rani Padmavati. Although there were controversies revolving around the film, it was a big success and had a lot of detail put into it to show the time period accurately.

Lagaan (2001)

This Aamir Khan movie is one of the first that people think about when they think about Bollywood movies set in the past. While the events of the film may not have happened, it depicted the tensions between the Indians and the British during the colonial times realistically.

Indu Sarkar (2017)

This was a political thriller set in the period of emergency in India from 1975 to 1977. While there were some mixed reviews from the critics, Indu Sarkar is a film that shows a time period of Indian history that’s not talked about much now and deserves a watch.

Jodhaa Akbar (2008)

Starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, this historical romance film was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, who had also directed Lagaan. While there may be some historical inaccuracies in the film, the lavish sets and costumes set this film apart from other historical films at the time.

Mangal Pandey: The Rising (2005)

Another Aamir Khan movie set during the time that British ruled India, this one is about a soldier who helped with the First War of Indian Independence in 1857, which was the very first big rebellion by the Indians against the British.
