There was a Brief Lull in My Career, when I was Typecast as a Glamour Doll – Shilpa Shetty

Written by Heer Pamnani

Shilpa Shetty pursued a career in modeling since someone suggested she had the appropriate height for the profession. She arranged for a photo shoot and sent her pictures to several ad agencies. Someone from one of the agencies noticed her picture and sent it across to the makers of Baazigar.

Baazigar (1993) marked Shilpa’s stunning debut in the Hindi film industry, a character which received immense empathy for being tortured and manipulated into death. She starred alongside Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan.

For Shilpa, landing roles was never a problem, she kept getting offers if her previous film had worked at the box office. However, the lull period came mid-career. She says:

“Women were just given glamorous parts, they were being typecast, and that’s when I suffered a brief lull in my career.”

The roles of the 90s were very predictable and mundane for the leading women. They were supposed to succumb to the demands of family, husband and were rarely seen pursuing a serious career.

The evolution began again for Shilpa when she was offered romantic tragedy film Dhadkan in 2000, followed by a full blown appearance in Apne (2007) and Life in a Metro, the same year.

She soon tied the knot with Raj Kundra in 2009, and gave birth to their son in 2012. Shilpa has been doing several reality TV shows which has kept her in the public eye, and might soon be seen in a full-fledged Bollywood film, details of which can’t be revealed as yet, as she is bound a contract.
