The “King of Comedy” Govinda aka Chi Chi turns 53 today! He’s been around for a while now and ruled the 90s and 2000s with a spate of comedies, showing off his natural comic timing which is impeccable. Be it kids, women or the elderly, he amused one and all with his hilarious dialogues, over-the-top costumes and of course, his moves on the dance floor. In fact, he is responsible for teaching an entire generation how to dance. He is someone who made some of the goofiest characters ever to appear in Bollywood actually look cool.
Let’s look at five funniest movies of Chi Chi that even today make us laugh out loud.
1. Raja Babu –
This is the most remembered film of the “King of Slapstick Comedies”, Govinda. His Michael Jackson impersonation in the title song of the film was just superb. Helmed by David Dhawan, Raja Babu saw Govinda’s amazing chemistry with Karisma Kapoor and Shakti Kapoor. Raja Babu started the trend for slapstick comedy films in Bollywood.
2. Coolie No. 1 –
Directed by David Dhawan, this film again saw Govinda paired with Karisma Kapoor, Shakti Kapoor and Kader Khan. Coolie No. 1 is not amongst the greatest comedy films of Bollywood, but worth a watch just for Govinda. He played the role of a coolie in the film, hired to woo a rich family’s daughter only to be caught in a series of hilarious situations.
3. Deewana Mastana –
Yet another David Dhawan film, Govinda was seen with Juhi Chawla and Anil Kapoor in this one. Govinda’s impeccable comic timing, coupled with Johny Lever’s tomfoolery was the highlight of this film.
4. Hero No. 1 –
Again a Dhawan-Govinda-Karisma film, Hero No. 1 was the modern take on Rajesh Khanna’s classic comedy Baawarchi. Govinda played the role of a young man who pretends to be a servant and magically solves all the problems of the family.
5. Haseena Maan Jayegi –
Govinda pairs up with director David Dhawan for the umpteenth time for this Bollywood comedy movie. Playing brother to Sanjay Dutt, they attempted to woo Karisma Kapoor and Pooja Batra respectively. As usual, he was at his comic best in the movie.
