Madhuri Dixit - Birthday
Written by Mansi Gupta

After spending nearly three decades in Hindi cinema, one actress who keeps on going even today is Madhuri Dixit. There is something about her that works with the audiences even today. In Bollywood, Madhuri is synonymous with beauty, grace and charm. Known for her dancing prowess as well as acting skills, she ruled the hearts of millions for a good part of her career.

Starting her career with Abodh, the actress shot to fame with her first hit Tezaab in 1988. She then gained some foothold in the industry with hits like Ram Lakhan and Parinda. The era of 90’s actually belonged to her. With hits like Dil, 100 Days, Saajan, Beta, Khalnayak, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Mrityudand and Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Madhuri ruled the box office. Almost every year, she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award during this era. She received critical acclaim for her performances in the films Pukar, Lajja and Devdas.

In the year 2002, when Madhuri got married to Dr. Sri Ram Nene, many hearts broke. She took a sabbatical from films and moved with her husband to the United States, only to make a comeback in 2007 with the musical film, Aaja Nachle. Although the movie didn’t do well at the box office, for Madhuri’s fans it was a treat. She took hold of many hearts when she performed on the legendary “Aaja Nachle” song in the movie. Late painter M F Hussain loved Madhuri so much that he not only painted her, but also made an unconventional film on her “Gaja Gamini”.

Madhuri is always referred to as the Dhak Dhak girl of Bollywood, courtesy of her dancing skills. She was bestowed with this name when she performed on the song “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” in the movie Beta. Her dance sequences for the songs like “Ek Do Teen” (from Tezaab), “Hum Ko Aajkal Hai” (from Sailaab), “Bada Dukh Deena” (from Ram Lakhan), “Chane Ke Khet Mei” (from Anjaam), “Didi Tera Dewar Deewana” (from Hum Aapke Hain Koun), “Choli Ke Peeche from (Khalnayak), “Maar Daala” (from Devdas), “Aaja Nachle” (from Aaja Nachle) and “Ghagra” from Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani are further testimony to her Dancing Diva Title.

In 2011, Madhuri appeared on the small screen as a judge of the celebrity dancing reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. She continued to be in the judge panel of the show for all the successive seasons. In 2014, she again did a sort of comeback with the movies, “Dedh Ishqiya” and “Gulab Gang”. Both the movies did fairly well at the box office and she received critical acclaim for her performances.
