A critically acclaimed movie, Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram was released in 2000 and it starred SRK in an extended cameo. Reportedly, actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan has acquired the rights for a Hindi remake of the political drama.
The movie was released as a Tamil-Hindi bilingual and it was written, directed and produced by Kamal Haasan who also happened to be the protagonist in the movie. King Khan played a key role in the movie.
Apparently, SRK was paid with a wristwatch for the film because Haasan had run out of money. Confirming the same, Kamal Haasan said:
The movie was originally made in Tamil and later on dubbed in Hindi. A semi-fictional storyline, the movie focuses on the partition of India as well as the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The phenomenal movie was selected by the Film Federation of India as the country’s official submission to Oscars but wasn’t nominated. However, the movie won three National Film Awards.
The film co-starred Rani Mukerji, Vasundhara Das, Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni and Vikram Gokhale in pivotal roles.
Recently, Kamal Haasan tweeted that he had presented a digital copy of the script to renowned Hollywood director, Christopher Nolan during the latter’s recent visit to India.
Met Mr.Christopher Nolan. Apologized for seeing Dunkirk in the digital format and in return am sending Hey Ram in digital format for him to see. Was surprised to know he had seen Paapanaasam. 😊 pic.twitter.com/iTPgQOZCMH
