After beating Pink and Sultan, M.S Dhoni: the Untold Story and Sarabjit finally make it to the Academy Awards this Year as India’s official entries. They have made it to the long list of 336 films eligible for Oscars. Apart from these Indian films, Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair directorial venture “Queen Of Fatwa” is also in the list of films selected in the Academy Awards this year. The list also includes movies like Deadpool, Manchester By the Sea, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, La La Land, Suicide Squad and X-Men: Apocalypse.
Just few days back, we got the news that Indian prodigy, A.R. Rehman has also won a place among the long list of 145 scores competing in the Original Score category. In 2009, the Mozart of Madras was being awarded the Academy Award for the Best Original score of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and also for the Best Original song ‘Jai Ho’ from the same film. This year as well he is competing in the prestigious Oscars. It seems he’s been a regular from India at the Academy Awards.
Sarabjit and M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story competing with Salman’s Sultan and Amitabh Bachchan’s Pink to win the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards. Both the films are biopics. While Sarabjit starring Randeep Singh Hooda and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan follows the life of an Indian villager who is wrongfully imprisoned in a Pakistani jail, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story featuring Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role is based on one of India’s most successful cricket captains, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Both the films have made it to the list, but the real test begins now. The nominations for each category will be announced on 24th of January. To be eligible for 89th Academy Awards consideration, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days. And under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.
This year Oscars have proved to be lucky for us, as two of our films, Sarabjit and M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story has made it to the list of feature films along with music maestro A.R. Rahman who has also made it to the list of original Score category.
